Thyme essential oil
1. - INTRODUCTION
Thyme essential oil is extracted by distilling the leaves and upper part of the plant. It has a deep aroma. This medicinal herbal oil must not be confused with various prepared mixtures called essences, which could be aromatic synthetic oils or a previously diluted or combined mixture of essential oils.
Only therapeutic-grade thyme essential oil can be used as a potent antioxidant supplement.
Thymol is the main component of thyme essential oil which has strong antiseptic properties, and is considered a very powerful oil which should be diluted before topical application. Thymol has been extensively documented for its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal action on various types of microorganisms, even those already resistant to traditional drugs.
Its main effect is for the treatment of respiratory diseases and digestive disorders and it is also widely used for its carminative properties that make it very effective for treating various stomach ailments.
Thyme essential oil acts as a nerve tonic, and like rosemary, stimulates the brain and memory, making it very useful in cases of fatigue or weakness. The primary effects of thyme essential oil are on the genitourinary tract and respiratory tract. It shares its antiseptic properties with tea and eucalyptus trees.
Due to the special characteristics of its compounds, thyme essential oil should be used with caution and diluted more than most essential oils. A sensitivity test should be done before use. If irritation occurs, apply a carrier oil on the affected area.
